Trama

Un dramma sull'infame massacro di Manchester del 1819, che uccise circa 18 manifestanti e ne ferì fino a 700. Il giovane trombettiere Joseph sopravvive miracolosamente alla sanguinosa battaglia di Waterloo e torna a casa, a Manchester, dalla sua famiglia di umili operai. Ma un'altra battaglia si prepara da quelle parti: quella del popolo inglese del dopoguerra, ridotto alla fame dalla disoccupazione e dalla tassa sull'importazione del grano e trattato con a ferocia e ingiustizia da una magistratura ecclesiastica arrogante e violenta. Giovani radicali e meno giovani riformisti moderati prendono a riunire folle sempre più numerose, pronte a domandare in piazza il diritto di voto che la Costituzione prevede per loro. Il governo di Londra, informato dei fatti, si prepara invece a difendere i propri privilegi, affilando le armi.
